An ABC News/Washington Post poll conducted in January shows that 74 percent of Americans believe Donald Trump should release his tax returns. A We the People White House petition asking for the release of his returns, launched shortly after Inauguration Day, has already amassed over a million signatures, making it the most-signed petition the White House has ever received. But despite this intense public pressure, Trump still refuses to release his returns. We want to know why. Tax March PDX believes Trump can’t have the trust of the American people until he releases his tax returns. By doing so, he could put to rest the speculation currently surrounding his administration on such topics as:

• Business dealings with foreign governments, including Russia, that could be used as leverage against the President and compromise the safety of the United States.

• Business dealings that are considered conflicts of interest and violate the constitution.

• Donations to organizations that work to restrict the rights of immigrants, women, people of color, or the LGBT community.

• Tax shelters, loopholes, or outright tax evasion.

Political leaders from across the country are also putting the pressure on Trump to release his tax returns. Our very own Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, has introduced the Presidential Tax Transparency Act, which would require all sitting presidents and major party nominees for president to release the last three years of their tax returns. This bill has the support of Sen. Tammy Baldwin (WI), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), Sen. Patrick Leahy (VT), Sen. Jeff Merkley (OR), Sen. Patty Murray (WA), and Sen. Jack Reed (RI), as well as such notable national organizations as the Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund, People for the American Way, Public Citizen, and Democratic Action. “I am committed to making sure this is not swept under the rug,” Sen. Wyden said in a town hall meeting in Oregon City on Feb. 18. “In America, the truth always comes out. This goes right to the heart of the legitimacy of American government.” Locally, Tax March PDX has the support of Sen. Wyden, Portland Indivisible, Portland Resistance, Know Your City, and more. Our partnerships grow stronger and more numerous everyday, and we hope you can be a part of this important movement.

Elizabeth Warren said Trump is "too chicken" to release his tax returns. Activists have picked this up and chickens have become the theme for the march. Thanks to Molly Lee, NWGSDPDX members were able to make chicken masks at our recent meeting. TaxMarchPDX organizers also made some. We are sure there will be extras for people on the day of the march or you can make your own.
