"In Our America" proceeds donated to JOIN

Immigrants and Refugees Are Welcome: NWGSDPDX donates $5,000 to JOIN, hosts donation drive at April 9 meeting.

Mission: JOIN exists to support the efforts of homeless individuals and families to transition out of homelessness into permanent housing. Our efforts are directed at individuals sleeping outside or in their car in the Portland Metro area. Our service provision is not dependent on age, gender, race, ethnicity, faith, culture, language, sexual identity, specific diagnosis, or identifiable issue.

Since 1992, JOIN has worked to bridge the gap between the housed and homeless communities in our region. Due to the current political climate, JOIN’s Latino and immigrant clients—regardless of their immigration status—are experiencing a real fear of detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). As a result, many of these families are afraid to take public transit or drive to complete errands, such as grocery shopping.

The $5,000 contribution from NWGSDPDX is helping JOIN address this issue by providing funds to purchase fresh, healthy and culturally appropriate food boxes for families in distress. Additionally, a portion of the funds are reserved for other preventative measures, such as helping individuals take care of small fixes for their vehicles (e.g. pay for vehicle registration fees) to help individuals avoid interacting with law enforcement.

To further our impact, NWGSDPDX is hosting a donation drive for JOIN at the April 9 meeting. All attendees are encouraged to bring hygiene items, first aid supplies, new/gently used clothing and even comfort items (e.g. books, head lamps, stamps) for our neighbors in need. A full list of items can be found here

Thank you to all those in our community that have helped NWGSDPDX make this meaningful contribution. This donation is part of NWGSDPDX’s effort to make a financial contribution to a local organization working to make each line of our flag a reality.

Most importantly, thank you to JOIN, because of your work “In our America, immigrants and refugees (feel) welcome.”

A JOIN success story. JOIN helped place this family in stable housing.
