We Did It!
We took back the House and elected a record number of women to US Congress. Election Night came with elation and heartbreak, but our work had a big positive impact, especially here in Oregon. We re-elected Kate Brown, secured super-majorities in the Oregon House and Senate, and victories on ballot measures. Before we look ahead to what’s next, we want to take a moment to look back and acknowledge that work.
In January 2018, as we turned our attention toward building a blue wave in the Pacific Northwest, we knew (to use a phrase that still resonates today) we were stronger together. Members of two groups, NWGSD and Persisters PDX, joined forces to create the Midterm Squad. With a passionate group of team leads working with the NWGSD board, Midterm Squad teams raised money, created messaging, connected with a diverse array of community partners, and got out the vote.
The Midterm Squad made it possible for our communities to jump in and participate. Our rallying cry became Storm the Midterms!, and our public “face” was Stormy, the blue wave and the beautiful, blue “I Am The Storm” art on our apparel and this #StormtheMidterms page.
The Midterm Squad collaborated with local and national groups including Indivisible Oregon, Portland Indivisible, One Small Thing PDX, Swing Left, county Democratic parties, local advocacy organizations, and grassroots leaders in Oregon and Washington. This was a collective effort, and none of it would have been possible without all of us working together.
Our projects included a Fundraising Party Toolkit, voter registration drives, Light Up The Vote (a voting awareness campaign in cannabis shops), #VoteNaked (a cheeky social media video highlighting the ease of vote-by-mail), the War Room (fast-paced digital messaging center), the Election Sprint Challenge (a 23-day GOTV email challenge), Tsu (a gorgeous collective art project representing the wave built by our actions), the Democratic Party Neighborhood Leader Program, election monitoring, and multiple marches, town halls, postcard parties, pep rallies, phone banks, text banks, and canvasses.
Like everything we’ve done so far, the Midterm Squad has been an experiment. No one started with formal experience in grassroots organizing or political campaigns. We’ve made mistakes, had false starts, changed roles, and learned by doing. But, together, we did it. All of us, together. And, whatever’s ahead, we will keep moving forward, together.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. We are so proud and grateful for every action -- every “drop” -- you added to this wave.
